Western Kentucky accumulated more first downs than Tennessee, gained more yards, finished with more time of possession than the Vols… and lost by 32.

Arkansas State finished with more first downs than Auburn. The Red Wolves gained 105 more passing yards, finished +5:48 in time of possession, committed three fewer penalties than the Tigers, and finished even in terms of turnover differential. Arkansas State lost by 29.

UAB outrushed LSU and held the ball for seven more minutes than the Tigers. The Blazers lost by 39.

Oregon State rushed for only 57 yards against Hawaii… and held the ball for 39 minutes and 50 seconds.

In victory, Washington State’s number of penalties (8) exceeded its number of rushing yards (7) against USC. The Cougars’ combined number of penalties and turnovers (11 – a total of 8 penalties and 3 turnovers) almost matched WSU’s number of first downs (12).

--San Diego State finished with an edge of 10:22 in time of possession compared to Fresno State. The Aztecs also finished with more first downs, more rushing yards, and more passing yards than the Bulldogs. They lost.

--USC rushed for only 30 yards on Saturday against Utah. The Trojans finished 3-of-15 on third downs. They gained only 14 first downs. They started two drives in the red zone and could not score a touchdown on either one. They scored just one touchdown on four drives that began in Utah territory. They won by 16.

--Virginia gained 14 more first downs than Georgia Tech despite being outrushed, 394-68.

--Georgia Tech finished with more yards than Virginia despite committing five turnovers and finishing with a minus-4 turnover margin, not to mention a deficit of 9:28 in time of possession.

--Rice finished with 7 more first downs than North Texas. The Owls gained 102 more yards, committed 4 fewer penalties, and held North Texas to 253 total yards. They lost by 12.

--North Texas’s offense did not begin a single scrimmage play inside the Rice 41. The Mean Green scored two non-offensive touchdowns. They also scored all four of their touchdowns on plays of at least 42 yards in length.

--Colorado State gained 15 more first downs than Boise State. The Rams outgained the Broncos by 189 total yards and 97 rushing yards. Colorado State finished with 17 more completions and was even in terms of the turnover differential. Boise State didn’t begin a single drive in Colorado State territory. Boise State won by 12 in a game the Broncos led at one point by 25.

--Mississippi State finished with 11 more first downs, 78 more yards, and 7:32 more in time of possession than South Carolina… and lost by 18.

--Arkansas finished with 7 more first downs than Auburn. The Razorbacks went 9-of-16 on third-down conversions, committed 3 fewer penalties, and gained an advantage of 8:28 in time of possession… and lost by 18.

--Troy gained more first downs, yards, and rushing yards than Louisiana-Monroe… and lost by 12 at home in a night game.

--Army gained 11 more first downs than Air Force and lost by 14 to the Falcons.

--New Mexico State gained more first downs and yards than Louisiana-Lafayette while committing fewer turnovers than the Ragin’ Cajuns. Yet, the Aggies lost by 14.

--This past week, 10 teams lost despite winning the time of possession battle by at least 11 minutes and 58 seconds. Colorado held the ball 11:58 longer than UCLA (35:59 to 24:01) and lost by 22.

--Penn State finished with more first downs and passing yards than Indiana. The Nittany Lions were plus-10:22 in time of possession and were even in turnover margin… and lost by 20 to the Hoosiers. 

--Kansas State held the ball for almost 19 minutes more than Baylor (plus-18:48)… and lost.

--Memphis finished with 5 more first downs than Houston. The Tigers finished plus-11:52 in time of possession. The Tigers limited Houston to 38 rushing yards… and lost by 10.

--ULM won despite completing just 16 of 32 passes for 112 yards and no touchdowns with 2 interceptions. The Warhawks scored two of their three touchdowns on pick-sixes, both of which covered over 70 yards. The Warhawks’ winning touchdown was their only offensive touchdown of the day. It came with 18 seconds left in regulation. 

--The combined third-down conversion rate for these two teams’ offenses: 3 of 27 (ULM finished 2 of 15, Texas State 1 of 12).

--Miami University (Miami-Ohio) finished with just 87 yards and 7 rushing yards against Cincinnati. The Redhawks were 0-of-11 on third downs and 0-of-3 on fourth downs. Miami completed just seven passes while throwing two interceptions and gaining only four first downs.

--Florida International finished with 30 yards and two first downs against Louisville. The Golden Panthers held the ball for 32:20.

--West Virginia finished with as many turnovers (6) as first downs in its loss to Maryland. The Mountaineers surrendered almost as many penalty yards (59) as the number of passing yards they gained (62). WVU converted only two third downs and threw two interceptions.

--San Jose State threw for 439 yards against Minnesota while the Golden Gophers threw for only 71 yards. Yet, the Spartans converted just 1 of 9 third downs. They committed three turnovers and lost by 19 to the Golden Gophers.
